Quotes from Mohandas Gandhi

The following (3) quotes are from Mohandas Gandhi. Please reflect upon each quote and try to relate each quote to a relevant local, state, national or global context. The issues do not to be related to traditional occupational therapy intervention. Photos are for embellishment unless stated otherwise.

I look upon myself
as a dull person.
I take more time than others
In understanding some things,
but I do not care.
There is a limit to man’s
progress in intelligence;
but the development
of the qualities of the heart
knows no bounds.

Visually Impaired Child in Indian School for the Blind

I am endeavoring to see God
through service of humanity,
for I know that God
Is neither in heaven,
nor down below, but in everyone.

Disabled Children Visiting a Newly Accessible Park in India

There are moments in your life
When you must act,
even though you cannot carry
your best friends with you.
The ‘still small voice’
within you
must always be
the final arbiter
When there is a conflict
of duty.

  1. The first quote reminds me of a concept we studied last quarter of accepting persons with disabilities as valuable and unique because of their disability, rather than trying to cure, eliminate or prevent that disability. The current campaign against using the word “retard” illustrates this quote well. The second quote is a great reminder that there is great (or greater) benefit in offering ourselves as OT to the local and global community, even though our services might not be reimbursable in many areas of need. We can truly share our faith through our acts of service (without preaching), by participating in overseas relief efforts, medical missions, and local organizations who serve the homeless, refugees and other underprivileged and underserved populations. The last quote is a great reminder that we should do what we feel is right and moral, and what God leads us to do, whether we are a minority or not. There may not be many OT’s providing volunteer professional services, but we should not be held back by those who may not agree or who emphasize the importance of how much we get paid. Even taking jobs which pay, but pay less, can be an example of that. There may be more pay and benefits and some practice areas, but that should not be our primary reason for choosing where to work. 2. The first quote is powerful in helping me to understand that mans heart is what matters most. When a physical impairment has reduced the ability for a client to proceed in his or her learning, then promote growth in the heart instead.
The second quote allows me to realize the power of the uniqueness in each individual I treat. In fact it shows me the power of every individual I meet throughout my day. We can learn so much about happiness through interactions with people.
The final quote reminds me to be me. To follow what I now is nobel and true. To lead with conviction that I am doing right for the world.
